Welcome to Altamont Sport Horses!
Altamont Sport Horses is a small farm producing quality Trakehners and Appaloosa Sport Horses for the disciplines of dressage, show jumping and eventing.  It is our goal to produce athletic and hardy foals with exceptional temperments.  Our foals are carefully handled on a daily basis until they are weaned at approximately 6 months of age.  At Altamont Sport Horses we begin the process of developing our foals' trust of humans from the moment they take their first breath.  Barring injury/illness of dam or foal, our foals/yearlings/two year olds are turned out to pasture 24/7 to run, play, and build strong healthy bones.

Our youngsters are shown in USEF sanctioned events in order to expose them to the show atmosphere which they will likely be encountering with their new future owners.  They have lifetime USEF recordings as well as USDF and USEA lifetime recordings, as appropriate for each horse.

We take an enormous pride in the horses we produce and hope you'll find something on our website that makes you smile.  If you see a horse that interests you, please contact us.  We look forward to hearing from you.

We recognize that athletic sport horses come in all sizes and not everyone truly needs a 16+h horse.  The difference between a 15.1hh and a 16hh horse is only three inches.  Three inches is nothing for an athletic horse to compensate for on the jump field and "smaller" horses can be more agile and light on their feet.  Dressage ability is unrelated to height and dressage horses do not require more height in order to perform or compete at high levels.  As eventer Karen O'Connor has demonstrated, even a 14.1 3/4 hh pony (Theodore O'Connor) can compete and place at upper level competitions such as The Rolex Kentucky 4 Star Three-Day Event (he placed 3rd in 2007) and the 2007 Pan American Games where he won both team and individual golds.  Our condolences to the owners, riders and management team on the passing of Theodore O'Connor.

The extra weight a larger horse carries is hard on the joints and puts the horse at risk for more injuries and arthritis, not to mention effecting overall endurace.  We love our horses and would like to see them stay sound and healthy as long as possible.  For this reason we do not limit our breeding to produce very large horses only over 16h, however, we do have some of those as well.  Furthermore, we will never intentionally mislead you on the size or height of our horses.  We want to help you find the horse that fits your body and your riding goals.  If we don't have the horse you are looking for we will happily recommend other breeding programs or farms you should contact.
